Shiawassee Radio Rebrands As MZX - Best Hits

Free Shiawassee-focused Streaming Station Plays "Best Hits" from the 80s and 90s, along with favorites from the 60s and 70s

MZX - Best Hits

After more than five years broadcasting in tribute to Shiawassee County's first FM radio station, Shiawassee Radio has officially rebranded as MZX.

Since April 2021, Shiawassee Radio has been playing songs from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, inspired by the era in which Shiawassee County's first FM radio station was known as WMZX.

MZX is owned and operated by Josh Strickland's Durand Now LLC.  "We've been looking critically at listener behavior over the past several months and we have made big adjustments to the playlist accordingly," Strickland said.

The station's music format will continue to be comprised of hits spanning the 1960s to the 1990s, but with a stronger lean into the 80s and 90s, and generally more focused on the songs that listeners have been responding favorably to over the past several months.

Strickland will be heard weekday mornings from 6am to 10am.

103.1 WOAP-FM and 1080 WOAP-AM signed on the air in 1948, but with the FM dial in its infancy at that time, the FM station left the airwaves in 1953. The FM station returned in 1965 at 103.9 on the dial.

In 1987, the Federal Communications Corporation forced the newspaper to sell the radio stations due to concerns over the distribution of media ownership in the area. In 1989, new ownership changed the call letters of WOAP-FM to WMZX.  The station carried those call letters until the mid-90s.

MZX - Best Hits features a playlist much like that of the original WMZX that operated from 1989 to 1996, and held an Adult Contemporary format with a playlist largely comprised of the biggest hits of the 1980s and 90s as well as favorites from the 70s and 60s.

You can listen to MZX live online at either ShiawasseeRadio.com or the new MZXHits.com.

Durand Now LLC also owns and operates UP - THE STREAM, playing Today's Christian Music and broadcasting for free 24/7 at UPSHIA.com.
